Format Guide

MTG Formats Explained

Which sets are legal where — and what it means for card prices.

Standard

The newest sets only (last ~2 years). Rotates yearly. Most accessible format — cards rotate out, so prices are stable but temporary.

Pioneer

Sets from 2012 onward. No rotation. Larger card pool, lower power level than Modern. Growing popularity for competitive play.

Modern

Sets from 2003 onward. The most popular eternal format. Powerful staples (Fetch Lands, Force of Will equivalents) hold value for years.

Legacy

Almost every card ever printed. Powerful — Ancestral Recall, Mox Sapphire, Force of Will. Cards are very expensive but retain value indefinitely.

Vintage

Every card ever printed, including the Power Nine. Cards are Restricted (1 copy only) rather than banned. The most powerful format in the game.

Commander

100-card singleton decks, almost any card legal. The most popular format by player count. Staples like Sol Ring, Smothering Tithe see strong demand.

MTG Card Values: What You Need to Know

💰

The Power Nine

Black Lotus, Ancestral Recall, Time Walk, Timetwister, and the five Moxen are the most valuable MTG cards ever printed. Only available in Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited — expect $3,000–$10,000+ each in near-mint condition.

📈

Foils, Borderless & Alt Art

Modern sets include foil, extended art, borderless, and showcase versions of cards. These premium variants command 2x–10x prices over regular versions. Judge foils from older years are especially sought after.

🔄

Rotation & Price Impact

Standard rotation drops card prices — sometimes by 50-90% overnight. Before rotation, high-demand Standard staples peak. After rotation, only Commander/Modern demand keeps older cards valuable.

MTG FAQ

Common questions about Magic cards, prices, and collecting.

What is the most expensive Magic: The Gathering card?

A Black Lotus in near-mint condition from the Alpha print run has sold for over $500,000 at auction. In our database you'll find regular copies listed between $3,000–$10,000. Timetwister, Mox Sapphire, and Mox Emerald are also consistently above $3,000.

How many MTG cards does TCGFomo have?

We track 115,736+ unique Magic cards across 1,043 sets, sourced from Scryfall — the most comprehensive MTG card database available.

Are foil MTG cards worth more?

Foil versions are almost always worth more — typically 1.5x to 5x the non-foil price. Older foils (pre-2003) are especially valuable because they warp more easily, meaning fewer survive in mint condition. Modern foils use a different process and are more plentiful.

What format is best for a new MTG collector?

Commander is the most popular format and has the widest range of playable cards. Building a Commander deck won't require the most expensive staples, making it the most accessible entry point price-wise.

Can I track my MTG collection on TCGFomo?

Yes — TCGFomo is completely free. Browse any MTG set, click + on cards you own, and your collection tracker updates instantly. See your total estimated value and what you're still missing from each set.
